Rebecca Clouâtre

Artist

Rebecca Clouâtre is a hand-cut paper collage artist based in Ottawa, Canada. In 2015 she received a Master’s degree in Art History and Curatorial Studies from Carleton University. After a brief career in historical research, she is now a full-time artist. In 2020, CBC Arts released Paper Cuts, a documentary about her artistic process. Her collages have been exhibited in Canada, the U.S.A., and Australia.

Clouâtre creates two-dimensional works that explore the interplay between nature and humanity. Through her art, she invites viewers to reflect and reimagine their connections to the environment and each other. Her collages blend vintage photographs, natural imagery, and salvaged materials and offer a whimsical meditation on feminism, womanhood, and sustainability. Inspired by natural history illustrations, Surrealism, and illuminated manuscripts, she balances intricate detail with negative space. Unexpected juxtapositions, varying scales, and rich textures define her approach. Sourcing materials from thrift shops, yard sales, and used bookstores, she breathes new life into forgotten imagery. Her research-driven practice celebrates the tactile nature of paper. Each piece becomes a call for contemplation, reminding us of art’s role in a fast-paced, machine-driven world.
